Scholarships listed in this section are given through the University of La Verne.  For non-university scholarships, go to the “External Scholarships” section of this page.

La Verne Law has many scholarships—made possible by our generous alumni and friends that are available to 2L, 3L, and 4L students. Some require an application, which can be accessed here. The deadline to submit an application for the 2018-19 academic year is Friday, January 11, 2019. If you have any questions, please direct them to lawscholarships@laverne.edu.

If you are interested in being considered for one or more scholarships, we encourage you to apply. Only one application form is necessary; to the extent, you wish to be considered for multiple scholarships, be sure to include information that addresses specific requirements of individual scholarships.

Scholarships include but are not limited to:

 

Michael and Jeanette Bidart Endowed Scholarship Student must have an interest in insurance law.
Joseph and Doleen Borba Endowed Scholarship Student must be a female in good academic standing with financial need.
The Dean’s Award of Excellence A rising 3L student who is in the top 15% of his or her class whose academic performance, leadership and service demonstrate professional promise.
Sean McDonald Endowed Scholarship Student must be in good academic standing with an interest in tort plaintiff representation, and must show financial need.
Paul T. O’Brien Endowed Scholarship Student who has demonstrated outstanding potential as a litigator.
Ann Rahm Endowed Scholarship Student who has demonstrated outstanding potential as a litigator.
Society for Justice Scholarship Student(s) must be in good academic standing with an interest in tort plaintiff representation, and must show financial need.
Taylor Warner and Crista Haynes Leadership Scholarship Student must be in the top 25% of the class, hold a leadership position in a student organization or clinic, and show financial need.
The Paul Egly Scholarship Fund The Paul Egly Scholarship Fund is an endowed fund honoring the founding dean of the College of Law, Judge Paul Egly. The Fund originally awarded scholarships based on financial need to law students in good standing who were single parents with minor children. The Fund is now available to all law students in good standing who are demonstrably engaged in their legal studies and passionate about serving their communities and promoting access and justice.

Heshmat Mirsepassi Endowed Scholarship for Muslim Students The faces of elementary school children Heshmat Mirsepassi taught in her native Iran lingered in her mind for decades. Many of those children came to school with just a crust of bread to eat for an entire day. One day, she vowed, she would have enough money to help them.

Requirements

  • Be a current or incoming student at the University of La Verne
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from your Imam or local Muslim leader
  • Participate in the Muslim Student Association while at the University of La Verne

Eisner Gorin LLP Scholarship

 

The Los Angeles criminal defense law firm of Eisner Gorin LLP is offering a $3,000 scholarship to students who have an interest in pursuing a career in law. Our law firm partners understand the value of an education and the need to help students achieve their goal. The high cost of education, including tuition, housing, and books frequently makes it difficult for many students achieve their dream in a career in the field of law. In an effort to makes financial issues a little easier, our law firm is offering this scholarship to any student. The ability to apply for this scholarship is open to any individual currently enrolled in a college or graduate program, or actively applying to attend one such program in 2018 or 2019.

Arnold & Itkin LLP Academic Scholarship

 

Arnold & Itkin LLP will award $5,000 to two current law students who share our passion for assisting the underprivileged and the victims of tragedy. Regardless of the area of law, the scholarship recipients should be focused on utilizing the legal system to support those less fortunate. The MLG Scholarship For Future Litigation Lawyers Mesriani Law Group understands the rigorous process that young law students go through to achieve their dreams of becoming practicing attorneys, along with the financial burdens that come with it. Many students often have to apply for financial aid and take out astronomical student loans, which is why grant programs are a great way to ease some of the difficulties associated with pursuing higher education.

A scholarship grant amounting to $500 shall be awarded to students who demonstrate the qualities and unimpeachable character embodied by every MLG lawyer:

Apart from stellar academic performance and the aforementioned characteristics and qualities, eligible applicants for the MLG scholarship grant must also possess the following:

  • Must be enrolled in any of the accredited colleges or universities in the U.S.
  • Must be a current law school student or an undergraduate student interested in pursuing law school

To apply for our law scholarship grant, student applicants are required to submit the following:

  • An original essay advocating why they should be chosen as the winner the MLG scholarship grant
  • Proof of current enrollment
  • School I.D. and a government-issued I.D. (i.e. driver’s license)

 Future Legal Leaders Scholarship Competition The team of lawyers and legal professionals at Sweet Law Group are looking to identify and reward young, talented individuals that are eager to succeed and make a difference through a career in Law.

The Sweet Law Group will award a scholarship to one outstanding student who demonstrates the drive and determination to succeed in the field of Law. The winner will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship to help support their education.

The competition is open to any post-graduate law school or undergraduate student attending a four-year accredited university. To participate, please complete the form below and submit a short essay (up to 2,000 words) responding to the prompt below.

Our law firm will award a total of $2,500 in scholarships to students who submit winning essays and videos

The attorneys of Mushkatel, Robbins & Becker, PLLC, invite you to share your thoughts and compete for one of our two scholarship awards:

Our goal is to foster discussion about the relationship between police agencies and communities while, at the same time, helping young people to pursue a higher education. Friends of Justice JUSTICE HOLLIS G. BEST SCHOLARSHIP

As a memorial to the late Presiding Justice Hollis G. Best, his friends have established a scholarship to encourage and support outstanding academic achievement and commitment to service by law students.The Best Scholarship is an annual award presented this year in the amount of $2,000, during the Spring 2020 semester. More than one scholarship may be awarded.

at least one year of law school.

Silberstein, Awad & Miklos Impact to the Community Scholarship 

New York attorneys at Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. strive to bring the highest quality of service and ethics to every case. THE REEVES LAW GROUP  Future Lawyer Scholarship

For 2019, The Reeves Law Group is awarding a $5,000 Scholarship to a deserving law student who authors a winning essay in our Seventh Annual Scholarship Essay Contest.

Keith Williams Law Group  The Keith Williams Law Group Annual Scholarship 

The Keith Williams Law Group Annual Scholarship seeks to help students who have fought through adversity in their lives in order to better themselves through education.  Understanding that, for many possible reasons, not everyone has been a straight A student with perfect test scores, we seek to help those who have had difficulty in school and fought through it—whether it be the result of a difficult home life, socio-economic disadvantages, learning disabilities, ethnic/racial/gender or other biases, just plain stubborn orneriness and misbehavior early in life, or any other reason.

The Keith Williams Law Group Annual Scholarship provides a $1,500 scholarship, with one winner to be chosen each year.  The winner will receive $1,500 to use toward pursuit of their higher education.

  • High School seniors who have been accepted to a college or university.
  • Currently enrolled students in any college or university, including graduate/professional schools.
  • No minimum GPA required to qualify.

Taylor & Ring’s Annual Victim Advocate Scholarship
We are proud to announce the Taylor & Ring Victim Advocate Scholarship. This annual award will be given to a student interested in pursuing the study of law with a specific goal of helping survivors of sexual assaultrapechild abuse, or sexual harassment in the workplace. The successful candidate needs to be currently enrolled in, or will be enrolled in, an accredited college or university or law school for the upcoming academic year. The scholarship can be paid directly to the student’s college or law school at his or her request, if necessary. Scholarship amount is $5,000. 

Requirements:  

  • An essay of no more than 1000 words about what the civil justice systems means to you;
  • Proof of enrollment in an accredited college or university or law school;
  • A brief statement about your financial needs.

Annual Reiff Law Firm Legal Scholarship
The Philadelphia law firm of The Reiff Law Firm, personal injury and car accident lawyers since 1979, is pleased to announce that we are currently offering young law students the 2020 The Reiff Law Firm Legal Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is open to any student studying for a career in the legal field.

Requirements: 

  1. You must be a citizen of the United States.
  2. You must demonstrate plans to enroll for admission‚ or have proof of current full-time enrollment at an accredited institution in pursuit of a J.D. If you have not yet received your acceptance into law school‚ you may still apply‚ but the scholarship will not be released without proof of acceptance and enrollment.
  3. Undergraduate students may apply; however, they should be able to meet the scholarship eligibility criteria outlined in bullet item two.
  4. Your GPA must meet a minimum score of 3.0.

THE CUNNINGHAM & MEARS ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP The Cunningham & Mears Academic Scholarship is an annual award of $2500, presented by the firm, to a student who wishes to pursue the study of History or Law. The successful candidate must be enrolled in, or have proof of upcoming enrollment in, an accredited college, university, or law school for the upcoming academic school year. The scholarship can be paid directly to the institution upon the request of the student. 

Deadline: June 1, 2020 

Eligibility requirements 

Applicants must submit the following information in order to be considered eligible for the scholarship: 

  • Proof of enrollment in the institution
  • A statement of financial need
  • 1 letter of recommendation from someone familiar with your academic work
  • An essay of no more than 1000 words about why you chose to study History or Law

THE WAGNER & WAGNER ANNUAL CIVIL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Each year, we will award $2,500 to an eligible law or pre-law student who is enrolled in, or has proof of upcoming enrollment in, an accredited college or university for the Fall semester. We will announce the winners in July 2019. 

Deadline: June 1, 2020 

Eligibility and requirements: 

To be eligible for the award, applicants must submit the following no later than June 1, 2020 

  • Proof of enrollment for the upcoming academic year
  • One (1) letter of recommendation from a member of the faculty or staff at the university or school, or from a teacher from the previous year (for incoming students only)
  • One (1) essay up to 1,000 words on “The injured plaintiff’s right to be compensated through litigation or mediation.”
  • Academic Transcripts from the current academic year (2019-2020)

We will award the scholarship and notify the winner proper to August 1, 2020. Please note that the we may choose to write about the winner on our website.

THE ANNUAL HARRIS LOWRY MANTON LLP CIVIL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP  This $5,000 award will be given to any incoming or current law student who is either currently enrolled, or who has accepted a place, in an accredited law school for the Fall semester of the upcoming academic year. This annual scholarship will be awarded at the end of July.

 Deadline: June 1, 2020

 Eligibility and requirements:

 To be eligible for the award, applicants must submit the following no later than June 1, 2020.

 

  • Proof of enrollment for the upcoming academic year
  • One recommendation from a member of the faculty or staff at the university or school (incoming IL students may submit a letter from a teacher from the previous year)
  • An essay of no more than 1,000 words about the importance of the right to a trial by jury

HON. WILLIAM C. CONNER WRITING COMPETITION  The Honorable William Conner Writing Competition was established to recognize exceptionally written papers that are submitted by law students and is presented each year at the Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner. The winner will receive a cash award of $1,500 and the Runner-up will receive a cash award of $1,000.

 Deadline: February 28, 2020

 

  1. All entrants must be law school students currently enrolled in a J.D. or LL.M. program (day or evening) in an accredited law school in the United States.
  2. An entry must be directed to any of the following subject areas of intellectual property, i.e., patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair trade practices, antitrust, and data security/privacy issues. 3.   3. Entries must be submitted in electronic form. Entries must be either in “Microsoft Word” (preferred) or “PDF” format, and further must be formatted as double-spaced text (except for headings, text in footnotes/endnotes, or block quotes, which may be single-spaced) on 8 ½ x 11 inch paper (paper orientation: portrait) with at least one inch margins on all sides, in 12 point or larger font.
  4. The entries will be judged on interest and suitability of topic, organization, legal analysis, writing, and professionalism of the work product. A grading rubric is available upon request. The top papers will be submitted to the Board of the NYIPLA for evaluation and determination of a winner and runner-up.
  5. The winner will receive a cash award of $1,500.00 and a plaque at the NYIPLA Annual Meeting and Dinner to be held in New York City on May 12, 2020 at the Princeton Club. The runner-up will receive a cash award of $1,000.00 and a plaque at the Annual Meeting and Dinner. The winning paper will be considered for publication by the NYIPLA. The winner and runner-up should plan to attend the Annual Meeting and Dinner.
  6. Entries previously submitted for consideration by or publication in scholarly journals will be accepted, but publication by NYIPLA must be permitted.

CONSTANCE BAKER MOTLEY NATIONAL STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION The winning paper author will be awarded $3,000 and each of the 2 runners-up will receive $1,000. The winning authors of the top 3 papers will be featured during the 2020 ACS National Convention and on ACS’s website and social media platforms. The top paper also receives an offer of publication in the University Of Pennsylvania Journal Of Constitutional Law.

Applicant Qualifications:  The competition is open to all law students who are dues-paying ACS members.

Judging Criteria: Papers will be judged on their effective use, analysis, and expansion of legal scholarship. Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to, voting rights, civil liberties, freedom of speech, LGBTQ+ rights, immigration, labor, money in politics, racial equality, religious freedom, Second Amendment, the 2020 Census, or the roles of state attorney generals. The selection committee will include federal judges and leading academics.

Scholarship Prize: The winning paper author will be awarded $3,000 and each of the 2 runners-up will receive $1,000. The winning authors of the top 3 papers will be featured during the 2020 ACS National Convention and on ACS’s website and social media platforms. The top paper also receives an offer of publication in the University Of Pennsylvania Journal Of Constitutional Law.

SWITZER ENVIRONMENTAL FELLOWSHIP The Switzer Fellowship Program offers one-year Fellowships to highly talented graduate students in New England and California whose studies and career goals are directed toward environmental improvement and who clearly demonstrate leadership in their field. The Fellowship includes a $15,000 cash award for academic study, leadership training, access to a vibrant network of more than 650 Switzer Fellowship alums, and opportunities for professional development during the Fellowship year and beyond.

Two professional letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters must be submitted by your recommender directly to the Foundation per the Recommendation Instructions.

Most recent Graduate academic transcripts. An official transcript of your graduate study is required.

Evidence of financial need where applicable. Although the Switzer Fellowship is merit-based, financial need may be considered when comparing equally qualified applicants.

MARK T. BANNER SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is part of The Richard Linn American Inn of Court’s commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers of high ethics, civility and professionalism, and especially those from diverse backgrounds.  The recipient of the scholarship receives $10,000 to be applied to their legal education.  This scholarship is available to law students who have entered into a JD program at an ABA-accredited law school in the United States and who will continue in that program through at least the fall semester 2020.
