Applying for Financial Aid

Complete Your Free Application for Federal Student Aid

Electronic FAFSA and Electronic Renewal FAFSA may be completed on the Web. A PIN to e-sign the application may be requested online during the FAFSA application process, or in advance at the Federal Student Aid website.

Fulfill Requests for Supporting Documentation

When your financial aid application is processed, you will receive written notification from our office if you are required to send any additional forms. The U.S. Department of Education may require documentation of  U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen status, Selective Service registration, clearance from defaulted educational loans, or a photocopy of your Social Security card. Some students are randomly selected by the Federal processor for an auditing process called verification. If you are required to provide additional documents a notification letter will be sent to the address listed on your FAFSA form.

Review Your Award Letter and Accept your Loans

Four to six weeks after you have been formally admitted to La Verne College of Law and Public Service and your FAFSA has been processed you can expect to receive an award letter detailing your Financial Aid eligibility. After you have reviewed your award, you must accept any loans or work study programs you have been awarded on-line. We automatically accept, on your behalf, any merit awards or gift/grant aid. Please sign into the La Verne Portal to accept the terms and conditions of your financial aid award before you can accept other financial funds you have been awarded, or to receive any financial aid funds. If you have difficulties accessing the Portal, please contact the Registrar’s Office at 909-448-4001 for assistance.

Once you’ve accessed La Verne Portal, you can click on the “Student Services & Financial Aid” tab, and then select the “Financial Aid Information” menu to see the financial aid offer that has been prepared for you. If you want to borrow a Direct Graduate Plus Loan or a private alternative loan you must contact the Office of Financial Aid for assistance with the process.

Complete Loan Entrance Interviews

Before your school disburses your Federal Loans (Stafford or Graduate Plus program), regulations require that you complete an entrance counseling session. The counseling session provides information about how to manage your student loans, both during and after college. If you have been awarded a Perkins loan you must complete a mandatory entrance interview which will be sent to you.

Complete Master Promissory Notes for Your Loans

All students who have been awarded a Federal Direct Student Loan for the first time at La Verne are required to complete a Master Promissory Note.

Disbursement of Loan Funds

Financial aid loan payments are normally received through electronic funds transfer (EFT). Funds are credited to your account after your financial aid application is completed and all requirements have been satisfied.  When the funds arrive from the Federal Direct Loan program, the Office of Student Accounts will receive and post the funds to your account within three days. If a credit remains after all financial aid funds have been applied to the student’s account, the Office of Student Accounts will request and issue a refund within fourteen (14) business days.
