Part-Time JD Program
La Verne’s Part-Time JD Program offers flexibility for law students who can’t attend classes full-time. Whether you’re a working professional, a parent, a caretaker, or simply have a busy lifestyle, La Verne makes it possible to earn your law degree on your time. Part-Time JD Curriculum
Part-time Juris Doctor (JD) students must complete 88 semester units to fulfill their degree requirements. On the part-time schedule, the JD degree takes four (4) years to complete. The Part-Time JD Program covers the same doctrinal, values, and skills-based curriculum as our Full-Time JD Program.
A sample of required doctrinal courses include:
Civil Procedure
These courses examine the constitutional and jurisprudential aspects of civil procedure. Topics of study include jurisdiction, venue, joinder of parties, and claims.
Constitutional Law
These courses dissect the law of the United States Constitution. The structure of the federal republic, the constitutional powers of the government, separation of powers, judicial review, and individual rights and liberties are discussed.
Contract Law
These courses discuss the formation of legal contracts and their enforcement. Subjects include contract consideration, offer, acceptance, mistake, reliance, capacity, equitable factors, and illegality.
One unit of each doctrinal course is dedicated to developing necessary values and skills.
Part-time JD students will also have opportunities to engage in experiential and simulated courses emphasizing the development of Litigation and Transactional skills during the Transformation Year of the program. In addition to these opportunities, part-time will be able to take several electives throughout their course of study. Electives include:
- Advanced Legal Research
- Adversarial Evidence
- Bankruptcy
- Family Law
- Intellectual Property
- Mediation
- Products Liability
- Workers Compensation
In addition to classroom learning, part-time JD students are required to take a minimum of 3 units of experiential learning. Experiential learning can take the form of externships, live-client clinics, and practicums.
