Article<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe AVID Student Outreach Program<\/strong><\/p>\nAbout HNBA<\/strong><\/p>\nThe AVID<\/strong> (Advancement Via Individual \u201cDetermination\u201d) program<\/strong> is designed to assist students to be successful in college preparatory courses in high school, including at least one Advanced Placement course, and to apply successfully to a four-year university.\u00a0AVID\u2019s systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase school-wide\/district-wide learning and performance. AVID is supported by 183 schools (97 middle schools and 86 high schools) with over 20,000 students enrolled.<\/p>\nOBJECTIVES<\/h3>\n\n- To motivate AVID students to seek college and a law school\/graduate education.<\/li>\n
- To increase student level of career awareness.<\/li>\n
- To provide information and other support to students to adequately prepare for future academic goals.<\/li>\n
- To spark interest in pursuing Law school as a future goal.<\/li>\n
- Promote University of La Verne College of Law and Public Service as a future schooling option, especially in the Inland Southern California region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n- Meet with AVID members approximately 3-5 times throughout the law school year for approximately one hour.<\/li>\n
- Share personal and schooling experiences.<\/li>\n
- Utilize ourselves as a tool for learning.<\/li>\n
- Provide encouragement for advancement in their academic careers and provide reasons to advance educational goals.<\/li>\n
- Brief presentations of statistics regarding law school and attorneys.<\/li>\n
- Question and Answer sessions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
STUDENTS AFFECTED
\n<\/strong><\/h3>\nStudents who:<\/p>\n
\n- Have appropriate classroom behavior.<\/li>\n
- Have a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average.<\/li>\n
- Have a good attendance record.<\/li>\n
- Have good work habits.<\/li>\n
- Willing to commit themselves to their school work.<\/li>\n
- Willing to commit to enrollment in a rigorous college preparatory sequence of courses.<\/li>\n
- Have determination and desire to peruse educational goals, college, and onward.<\/li>\n
- Students with GPAs between 2.0 and 3.5 the year before they are selected for an AVID program.<\/li>\n
- Students who may be the first in their family to go to college.<\/li>\n
- Students who are traditionally underserved in four-year colleges.<\/li>\n
- Students with a framework or support structures in place that enables them to become competitive in college application process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
ASSISTANCE<\/strong><\/h3>\nThis is an HNBA-proposed event, but we would like to collaborate with the Diversity Committee, APALSA, NBLSA, and any other organization or individuals interested in participating. The success of this event is greatly dependent on student participation. If each group spares a different member per visit, it will only take approximately 2 hours total from that law school student\u2019s year.
