Respected Attorney, James Heiting to Address Graduates at La Verne Law Commencement

Students to Receive Degrees during May 10 Ceremony on University’s La Verne Campus

James O. Heiting, the only individual from the Inland Empire ever elected to the presidency of the State Bar of California, will deliver the keynote address to this year’s graduating class during the 2014 University of La Verne College of Law Hooding & Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 10.

Scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in the Sports Science & Athletics Pavilion on the university’s La Verne campus, this year’s commencement will see this year’s graduates receive their degrees from Inland Southern California’s only American Bar Association-approved law school. Due to space restrictions, attendance to the 2014 ceremony is limited to participants and invited guests. Parking is free. Heiting, who initially opened a small law office in Riverside in 1976, handles civil litigation matters throughout the state, dealing with wrongful death, serious injury, professional malpractice and transportation accidents, and has recovered in excess of $100 million for his clients. He has served in a variety of roles in the Superior Court and the Federal District Court. Along with garnering recognition as a successful, tough and tenacious lawyer, he is a highly regarded as a privately requested and court-appointed mediator and arbitrator both in state courts and the California Court of Appeal.

Along with his work on the Board of Governors of the State Bar of California, Heiting is former president of the Riverside County Bar Association (RCBA), co-founder of the Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court, a charter member of the Inland Empire Federal Bar Association, and was West Coast Commissioner of the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs. He is founder and co-chair of the Inland Empire Champions of Collaborative Courts, a trustee with the International Lawyers Group (ILAA), and has served on both the Chairman’s Council and Risk Management Committee of the Betty Ford Center.

Heiting has been recognized for his State Bar service with awards from the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, senators and other legislators. He was 2009 recipient of the RCBA’s Ralph A. Krieger Award for meritorious service, and has been honored for exemplary service as a mediator/arbitrator by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and California’s Fourth District Court of Appeal.

Established in 1970, La Verne Law has been provisionally approved by the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association effective March 16, 2012. Located in the heart of the city of Ontario, it is the only ABA approved law school in Inland Southern California, which includes eastern Los Angeles County as well as San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
