In 2005, Professor Uchimiya joined the College of Law faculty. She brought to the College significant practice experience, as well as clinical law teaching experience. She practiced immigration law for over ten years—eight in private practice and two as an Advocacy Fellow/Advising Attorney with the Center for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) at the Georgetown University Law Center. In private practice, she represented non-citizens in a variety of cases before the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Federal Courts. At CALS, she co-taught the classroom component of the asylum clinic and advised case teams in all aspects of client representation.
Professor Uchimiya founded the Justice and Immigration Clinic (JIC) at La Verne Law in January 2008. Through the JIC, students work in pairs to represent an asylum applicant in an asylum case either before the Asylum Office or the Immigration Court. Students develop skills from the client interview, fact investigation, legal research, affidavit and brief writing, and oral advocacy to the asylum applicant’s interview before the Asylum Office or before the Immigration Court.
Professor Uchimiya has authored articles regarding right to counsel in immigration court proceedings, fraud issues in asylum, and gang-based asylum cases (publication pending). In addition, she has participated in pro bono trainings and presentations in the community. She is a member of the State Bar of California and the District of Columbia and is admitted to the United States Supreme Court. She has been a longstanding member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
