Gilbert A. Holmes has been a member of the legal academy since 1990 and is a recognized leader in law school administration.. He joined the University of La Verne College of Law as the Dean in June 2013. He previously served as the Dean of the University of Baltimore School of Law from July 2001 to June 2007, and as a member of the faculty at UB Law from July 2007 to June 2013. He also served on the faculty of Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, where he was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Budget and Planning. Additionally, Dean Holmes served on the faculties of Southern Methodist University School of Law, Seton Hall University School of Law, and Florida A&M University College of Law.
Dean Holmes is a dedicated servant to the advancement and reform of legal education. He served the Association of American Law School in multiple capacities. He has been on the Membership Review Committee and an officer of the Section on Family and Juvenile Law. He was a founding member and an officer of the Section on Part Time Divisions. Dean Holmes has served the ABA in its accreditation process. He has been a member of the Accreditation Committee of the ABA Section on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar, has served on numerous ABA Site Evaluation Teams as a chair, AALS Reporter and a member of the team, and has been a presenter at ABA Workshops for Site Team Evaluators.
Dean Holmes has also been recognized as an educator and a mentor for student success. He was twice named Day Division Teacher of the Year at Texas Wesleyan. He is the recipient of the Presidential Achievement Award from the National Bar Association, an Outstanding Teacher Award from the New York University Law School Alumni Association and in 2005 was the inaugural recipient of the National Black Law Students Association Lifetime Achievement Award. His contributions to legal education were recognized by the creation of the “Dean Gilbert A. Holmes Professorship in Clinical Theory and Practice” at the University of Baltimore, School of Law. In 2010, he founded the Charles Hamilton Houston Scholars Program to facilitate minority college students’ quest to qualify for and attend law school.
Prior to entering the legal academy, Dean Holmes had a private practice of law in New York City for 16 years. He also was the Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union Suffolk County Police Misconduct Project and a Reginald Heber Smith Community Law Fellow at the Community Action for Legal Services in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, NY.
Dean Holmes has authored articles on a range of family law and constitutional issues in such journals as the Maryland Law Review, The University of Miami Law Review, Temple Law Review and Texas Wesleyan Law Review, and has presented a host of topics at conferences and symposia across the country.
